I had issues with overheating in my one when it was idling for any length of time, the temp would just slowly creep up and up and it was because the thermo-switch for the electric radiator fan was dead and it was never coming on. Yes, it is just a thermocouple in the exhaust and it comes on if the exhaust temps get too high for the cat converter.

Wow I wonder how they got hold of 3 sets. I could sure use a set to replace the aftermarket ones in mine but shipping to New Zealand would be horrendous.

Regarding the temperature, you'll probably find that the termostatic switch that turns the electric fan on is dead as I have the same problem in my jap era. If you take the bolt out you'll get your missing 3 psi back! The stone thing is basically the same as the airstones they use in aquariums it's just to keep debris out of the solenoid. Unfortunately I don't have a spare one.
