Saturn 5 ? No engine 5 as I approach the moon

Post by an old original » Wed Mar 25, 2015 7:21 pm

Cryptic way of saying that as I get nearer to the quarter of a million miles, the wee beastie is in dry dock having engine rebuild number 5, along with a gearbox rebuild No. 4, along with a front end rewire......

first news after 5 weeks... new block required :-(

Oh dear, sorry to read your news...... If only ERA were still in business I am sure they would have awarded you something for achieving such a high mileage.

What do you reckon the final cost is going to be?

As a consolation think of all the depreciation you would have endured through the years - I guess what you get with an ERA is appreciation!

and......

I know you want to........

You can clean up your engine and bay while it is out!

Good luck with the project, let us know how it turns out.

He has spent time with a certain David Vizard so I think/hope it's in safe hands......

Week 12 - Thought I'd found a replacement block a nice, unbored 1275 A+. Van hired, picked up block, took to garage, and....
apparently it's an "early" A+ - something different with the crank bearings which would work but possibly might not be as reliable as it should be....keep on looking, s'pose

Week ??? no idea, We are into months now!!

Update is that a "virgin" block has been sourced and is being worked on. The head has already been sorted and the rewire has been mainly done, so might get it back by the end of the month - maybe

Great! Did it take this long to find all the bits required to rebuild the motor?

A couple of things which slowed everything... Other cars came into mateys garage which took precedent, but the main problem was also trying to find a A+ block which hadn't been bored out before and that someone was willing to sell. There are blocks out there but most people want to hang on to them for their own purposes. A problem which I fear will only get worse...
